Artist Statement

My portraits tell a story using the figure and symbols to achieve a narrative. The symbols and props in my work are ordinary objects taken out of context. Each viewer will have his own unique understanding my work because they create their own meaning for the symbols based on unique life experiences. Many of my paintings often deal with gender roles and self-perception. It is my hope that while examining my portraits, people will also examine themselves. Looking at one of my portraits is a bit like comparing thoughts on ink blots; hopefully viewers will learn more about themselves in the process.
